Decking Rope

Rest assured that our decking rope will look superb in your garden!

Made to look and feel like a natural fibre rope but with the added benefits of being weather resistant.

What is decking rope?

Decking rope is a synthetic hemp rope for decking (polyhemp) which resembles the nautical ropes of old.

Modern rope production methods mean that you won't suffer from the shrinkage or snapping often associated with traditional natural fibre ropes.

How do you fix rope to decking posts?

We offer a wide range of decking rope fittings to finish off your rope ends and attach to your posts. You can also take a look at our decking rope pdf below which gives you lots of information about how to attach rope to a post and which to choose. If you need any help, give us a call and we'll help you decide how to secure your decking rope.

Do you offer this rope in smaller sizes?

We offer a range of larger diameter decking ropes but if you're looking for smaller diameter polyhemp rope just click here to see all sizes of polyhemp rope.

NB: Our ropes are all manufactured to the stated diameter, however, when they are cut to length the fibres swell and they may be bigger than you expect. Please don't drill your holes until you have received the rope or ask us for a sample if you need to check that the rope will fit in existing holes. For example: a 28mm rope will not fit through a 28mm hole!  You will need either a larger hole or a smaller rope. Holes will need to be at least 5mm larger than the diameter of your rope.

Which decking rope ends shall I choose?

Our decking rope is cut and sealed properly with our hot knife so you don't need to have anything on the ends. If you're choosing decking rope fittings it is best to select 'none' for the rope ends as the rope will then fit in to the fittings you choose.

However, you may prefer your rope to look more decorative or to have a function so some of our end choices may be more suitable. We can arrange to fit these for you if you're not sure about doing it yourself. We charge a nominal fee of £4.50 per end to fit your fixings for you.

Please note: We can and will splice the 36mm Hardy Hemp for you if required but there is a £15 surcharge applied to splices in this rope size.

We've put together a couple of pages of pictures to help you choose the right option, just ask for a copy and we'll email it to you or you can click here to view it yourself.

What is the best rope for decking?

A synthetic fibre rope which won't rot or snap like natural fibre ropes of the past. Our decking rope looks and feels like a natural fibre rope, giving that nautical look that every new deck deserves. Decking rope is available in a range of diameters giving you the choice of a rope that is slim and stylish or chunky and sturdy to hold.

Its softer texture makes this the perfect rope choice for children's play areas. It's a popular rope for the pirate ship in the playground or for making a children's rope bridge. It's also very easy to splice so great for attaching a climbing rope to the children's climbing frame.

Can I cut a deck rope myself?

Yes, you can. We cut all of our ropes with our electric hot knife and its worth investing in one if you have lots of ropes to cut. However, cutting your decking rope to the desired length is fairly easy. We suggest you mark the rope where you want to cut then tape the rope securely using either masking tape or duct tape on either side of this mark. Pull the tape as tight as you can and make sure you wrap around the rope 3 or 4 times. Cut between the two rows of tape using a fine tooth saw, bread knife or sharp bladed knife. Before removing the tape, use a heated blade, gentle blow torch flame or possibly a lighter to gently melt the cut end. Use an old blade to smooth the end of the rope and remove any lumps or bumps. When the molten fibres have set hard (30-40 seconds) you can remove the tape. This is all best done outdoors or in a well ventilated area.

Should I choose natural or synthetic decking rope?

  • Natural fibre ropes, such as manila decking rope, are made of natural fibres and like any plant material, they will biodegrade. A decking rope made of natural fibre will probably remain fit for purpose for approx 3-5 years. Natural fibre ropes look great and hold knots well. They like the sunshine and will last longer in sunnier climates and warm sunny gardens. Natural fibre ropes will shrink by approx 10% when wet and then lengthen again when dry. You need to allow 10-15% extra length so that the shrinking doesn't pull your posts over. Natural fibre rope is great for the environment.
  • Synthetic fibre ropes (ropelocker decking ropes) are made to look and feel like traditional natural fibre rope. They are weather resistant and won't shrink when wet. Synthetic decking rope is easy to splice and knot and is compatible with all of our decking rope fittings. Synthetic ropes will last significantly longer than natural fibre ropes.
